PHOENIX, AZ-The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) has mobilized its Arizona members today in an effort to vigorously oppose a proposed Arizona bill (HB 2286), set for a committee hearing on January 22nd, that brands individuals or organizations "not affiliated with a law enforcement entity" as felons for patrolling and detecting illegal activities-a clear encroachment upon numerous U.S. Constitutional guarantees of free association, assembly, self-protection and the right to keep and bear arms. Outraged members of the Minutemen have already begun flooding the phones of their elected state officials in order to keep their rights from being infringed upon.

"This bill would make possessing a weapon while participating in a Neighborhood Watch organization a 'Class 5 Felony', states Chris Simcox, President and Founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "Every law abiding Arizona citizen should be outraged by HB 2286, as it would make it illegal for anyone simply to report observed illegal activity and surely spell the end of all Neighborhood Watch Programs-not only the obviously politically targeted Minuteman watch movement-anyone could be arrested for being a responsible member of your community."

MCDC believes such a bill would encourage an increase in illegal border activity in a region that has some of the highest rates of drug smuggling between the United States and Mexico. The bill sponsored by Democrat AZ State Representative Kyrsten Sinema (HB 2286), is an affront to Minutemen volunteers who spend thousands of hours annually patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border, assisting the U.S. Border Patrol in apprehending individuals who commit a variety of illegal activities. More than 10,000 such assists have been facilitated and documented by MCDC-made necessary because the U.S. government has failed to properly man and fund border patrol activity.

"Laws of this nature serve no other purpose than to hinder organizations like the Minutemen, who have been an effective force in deterring illegal immigration when our elected leaders have chosen to ignore this crisis," explains MCDC's Simcox. "Our elected representatives have a responsibility to ensure the public safety, but continue to threaten our safety with their thoughtless and feckless policies."

Sinema's HB 2286 also seeks to target groups or individuals who conduct these patrols "armed with a firearm or other weapon," thereby encroaching upon U.S. citizen's Constitutionally guaranteed Second Amendment rights, and impeding law-abiding Arizona citizens who are tired of their state being treated as a safe-passage for drug smugglers, terrorists and rapists.

Simcox continues, "this bill is designed to protect sex and drug traffickers coming across from Mexico from being apprehended, and to deprive U.S. citizens of our Constitutional rights. Our Members are outraged and will not permit the Arizona lawmakers to pass this anti-constitutional piece of legislation."

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) is a peaceful, law-abiding and citizen-led initiative organized to stand watch at our borders and in our neighborhoods, report illegal activities to the proper authorities, and build border fencing on private lands using private donations. Additionally, MCDC seeks to urge local and federal officials to enforce our immigration laws in order to keep our families and country safe. MCDC conducts border watch operations that assist the activities of the U.S. Border Patrol, reports employers of illegal aliens, and advocates to keeps tax dollars from being used for illegal alien benefits.
