SENATE COMMITTEE TO OPEN BORDERS, NOT SECURE THEM

JUDICIARY SUBCOMMITTEE SET TO CREATE A ROADMAP TO AMNESTY

PHOENIX, AZ— The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) express grave concerns over tomorrow’s Judiciary Subcommittee hearing that calls for a roadmap to amnesty through the Department of Homeland Security’s “US-VISIT” Program. The Congress should be calling for strict enforcement of current immigration laws and providing funds for more border patrol agents and the construction of a security fence, to ensure national security and public safety.

The Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security will receive one-sided testimony from members of the Bush Administration who will support the President’s weak immigration policies, as well as lobbyists representing the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, an organization in support of open borders and amnesty.

“There is an urgent need to secure the border and it starts with building a fence, not providing a roadmap to amnesty,” states Chris Simcox, President and founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.  “While these Senators are examining ways to keep our borders open, there is no one testifying with a common sense approach to border security.”

Rather than address the enforcement of current immigration laws or funding the fence of the Southern Border which Congress “authorized” and then neglected last year, tomorrow’s hearing seeks to promote a policy that advances a roadmap to amnesty while only focusing on technological measures for security.  According to the Department of Homeland Security’s website, the US-Visit Program “protects the privacy of our visitors,” and seeks to “demonstrate that we remain a welcoming nation and that we can keep America’s doors open and our nation secure.”

Even while the U.S. Congress voted to authorize, but failed to fund a fence on the United States-Mexico border, the Minutemen have continued to volunteer their time to build a security fence through private donations obtained from thousands of citizens nationally.  MCDC has already taken steps to build demonstration fencing along the border with the fiber optic mesh produced by FOMGuard, USA, also currently in use on U.S. military installations, the DMZ in Korea and the West Bank in Israel.

Simcox continues, “When will our elected leaders look to ensure our nation’s security rather than continuing to open our doors to international gang syndicates, arms dealers, rapists, drug traffickers and terrorists?  It is ridiculous for them to worry about the privacy of lawbreakers, rather than the security of our porous borders and the safety of our citizens.”

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) is a peaceful, law-abiding and citizen-led initiative organized to stand watch at our borders and in our neighborhoods, report illegal activities to the proper authorities, and build border fencing on private lands using private donations.  Additionally, MCDC seeks to urge local and federal officials to enforce our immigration laws in order to keep our families and country safe.  MCDC conducts border watch operations that assist the activities of the U.S. Border Patrol, reports employers of illegal aliens, and advocates to keeps tax dollars from being used for illegal alien benefits.
