PHOENIX, AZ— The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) remind the GOP candidates debating tonight in South Carolina that millions of Americans are listening for the candidate who will stand strong in his demand for border security first and opposition of the amnesty legislation (S.1348) pending a cloture vote this week in the United States Senate. This bill—which ignores the demands of U.S. citizens who seek border security as the priority—was crafted in collaboration with members of the Bush Administration, and mimicks last year’s Kennedy-McCain bill in officially creating a roadmap to the dangerously deep and wide illegal alien amnesty that President George W. Bush has been aggressively espousing since his State of the Union Address in January.

”There is no room for the ‘compromise’ that we hear is going on in the smoke-filled back rooms of the Senate,” states Chris Simcox, founder and President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. “Border security must come first, and strict enforcement of our laws without political fear or favor is an indispensable, key component.”

The bill under consideration this week is being sponsored by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and co-sponsored by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Ken Salazar (D-CO). The Minutemen urge citizens to immediately contact these Senate offices in order to voice their opposition to the amnesty bill, as well as to remind all Members of Congress to enforce the funding of a security fence on our nation’s borders that received passage in both the U.S. House and the Senate, and was signed into law by President Bush last year.

Unlike the U.S. government, the Minutemen have already been implementing a plan for border security that includes an effective material barrier—by volunteering their time, energy and personal funds in order to build highly effective demonstration security fencing on private ranch land, expensed through private donations obtained from thousands of citizens nationally and recently featured in National Geographic magazine.  To educate the public and force federal government attention to the realities of border security, Minuteman volunteers have taken steps to build this fence along the border utilizing state of the art technology with the fiber optic mesh produced by FOMGuard, USA, also currently in use on U.S. military installations, the DMZ in Korea and the West Bank in Israel.

Simcox continues, “Voters should inform their elected officials that they are to fulfill the requirements of the U.S. Constitution and the oaths of office that go with federal public service—to protect and defend the general welfare.  These politicians who sit in their secured Capitol Hill offices want to throw amnesty into the mix while America faces tremendous risk from terrorists, organized criminal cartels, and others who mean us harm.  These pampered lawmakers act without an understanding of how porous borders are damaging this great nation, and we will not take this fight lying down; nor will we be accepting presidential candidates who mouth platitudes instead of offering security solutions.”

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) is a peaceful, law-abiding and citizen-led initiative organized to stand watch at our borders and in our neighborhoods, report illegal activities to the proper authorities, and aid in the construction of border fencing on private lands using private donations.  Additionally, MCDC seeks to urge local and federal officials to enforce our immigration laws in order to keep our families and country safe.  MCDC conducts border watch operations that assist the activities of the U.S. Border Patrol, reports employers of illegal aliens, and advocates to keeps tax dollars from being used for illegal alien benefits.
