SENATE COMMITTEE ADDS AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL AG WORKERS TO IRAQ SPENDING BILL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— May 20, 2008
CONTACT: John Unger, 610-624-1199

PHOENIX, AZ — On behalf of citizens nationally the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) calls attention to a backdoor attempt by the U.S. Senate to use a supplemental appropriations bill – intended to provide funding for this nation’s bravest fighting the war effort in Iraq – to essentially sneak illegal aliens and their families over our country’s borders while the American people aren’t looking.  The Senate Appropriations committee is doing just that this week; they are smuggling a vote by the full Senate on Wednesday with controversial Amnesty provisions for over a million illegal aliens as an addendum to the Iraq War Supplemental Spending bill.

The addition of two amendments to the Iraq spending bill means that in order to provide emergency funding for our courageous troops in Iraq, Senators will be forced to approve this open borders stealth strategy, and provide illegal aliens amnesty and expand guest worker programs. Among other gratuitous liberties, this Ag - Jobs amendment sponsored by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Larry Craig (R-ID) would grant a five year Amnesty to over 1.3 million undocumented illegal aliens working in the agricultural industry.

Carmen Mercer, Vice President and Director of Governmental Relations of MCDC comments, “An open door Amnesty policy by the Senate is a clear welcome mat forever – there is no instruction on what happens after five years with these millions of illegals now in our country living off our citizens.”

There is no reason for an Amnesty bill to provide growers with workers.  Already in place is the H-2A foreign worker program that provides growers with an unlimited number of temporary workers – so long as the growers agree to pay a decent wage and ensure that laborers go back home at the end of the season. The H-2A visa program has been implemented successfully by the North Carolina Growers Association, which opposes all efforts at Amnesty for illegal alien ag-workers.

For the past four years claims have been made that we will fail to harvest crops and feed the world without Amnesty for illegal aliens, but with Amnesty legislation staved off, somehow the harvests have still happened.  “We don’t need Amnesty for law breakers; we need secure borders for law abiding citizens,” states Mercer.

“Attaching Amnesty to the Iraq War Supplemental spending bill, likely paving the way for legal status being awarded to millions of aliens who entered our country illegally, is an egregious act of disrespect for our men and women in uniform and to the citizens of this country,” Mercer continues.

“With economic conditions as they are, unemployment rates going up, and industries across the country eliminating both skilled and unskilled positions, shouldn’t our government be championing law-abiding citizens rather than sneaking to vote Amnesty and special citizenship that protects law-breaking illegal aliens?”  Mercer concludes, “The politicians will talk; the liberal media and the ‘Hate America’ crowd will offer amnesty to lawbreakers; the Minutemen will act in defense of America to halt Amnesty and secure America’s borders now.”

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC) is a peaceful, law-abiding and citizen-led initiative organized to stand watch at our borders and in our neighborhoods, report illegal activities to the proper authorities, and aid in the construction of border fencing on private lands using private donations. Additionally, MCDC seeks to urge local and federal officials to enforce our immigration laws in order to keep our families and country safe. MCDC conducts border watch operations that assist the activities of the U.S. Border Patrol, reports employers of illegal aliens, and advocates to keeps tax dollars from being used for illegal alien benefits.
