Maryland Weekend Update - 1/19/06

Welcome!!!

...to the latest Maryland Minuteman Civil Defense Corps Weekend Update. We use these Updates to keep you informed of MMCDC activities, and to give you practical suggestions on things you can do about the growing problem of illegal aliens in Maryland.

All information about MMCDC activities in this Update is public, so feel free to forward it to friends and family as concerned as you are about illegal immigration.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR -- JANUARY 24!
If you live in Montgomery County and are concerned about illegal immigration, then you will be at Ike Leggett's upcoming Town Hall Meeting on January 24th. We need a big turnout to publicly question Leggett's undemocratic, unilateral and arrogant decision to put a temporary Day Labor Site on Crabbs Branch Way near Shady Grove Road
(across from Giant at the Grove Shopping Center). Without discussion or input from you, he has decided to ignore years of community planning on developing Shady Grove. Instead, he wants to spend YOUR tax money to abet criminal activity in your community because he thinks it's, "the right thing to do."

Leggett's campaign literature said he wanted to, "...make sure everyone has a seat at the table." Well, were YOU invited to the table when this decision was made? I didn't think so! So -- make your voice heard next Wednesday!

LOCATION:
Northwood High School
919 University Boulevard
Silver Spring

WHEN:
Meeting starts at 7:30 but everyone needs to get there by 6:30 to get a seat on the aisle so you can speak. We also need protesters to stand outside holding signs like "Libraries, not Day Labor Centers."

If you don't live in Montgomery County, you can still help by showing up and applauding. If you do live in Montgomery and don't make an effort show up, then you might as well opt out of this newsletter, because you're not really an activist after all!

GAITHERSBURG DAY LABOR CENTER UPDATE
According to plans filed with the MoCo Planning Board, the "temporary" day laborer center project will be located "at the Montgomery County Department of Public Works highway services depot along Crabbs Branch Way, close to the entrance to Montgomery County Food Services facility, in the County Service Park...The project includes two office trailers, picnic tables and trash bins and three portable sanitary stalls."

If you want to see the plans, contact Sue Edwards (sue.edwards@mncppc-mc.org or 301-495-4518) and ask about project MR-07302-DPWT-1. Be polite -- it wasn't Sue's idea!

WASHINGTON TIMES ON LEGGETT'S POWER GRAB
Here's a link to a Thursday, January 18, 2007 Washington Times editorial on the proposed day laborer center.

ANOTHER PUBLIC MEETING - FEB 8
There will be a public hearing about the day labor center at:

Montgomery County Planning Board
8787 Georgia Avenue
Silver Spring MD 20910

We'll let you know the time as soon as we find out.

OPEN MMCDC MEETING
There will be an open meeting of the Maryland Chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps on Sunday, January 21st:

Time:
3:00 - 5:00pm

Location:
Howard County Central Library
10375 Little Patuxent Parkway
columbia MD 21044
(across from Columbia Mall)

Come help us plan our response to Leggett's abuse of executive power on January 24!

WEBSITE OF THE WEEK
The new Maryland citizen's group, Help Save Maryland, has started a blog. It's a good way to stay up-to-date on the battle against the Shady Grove day laborer center.
